Title: Young Citizen Award from the President of Ireland for the European Year of Citizenship through Education
Description: This is a recognition award for work being done in the area of Citizenship education projects and initiatives. It is hoped that recognition will encourage young people to further develop a sustained interest in active citizenship. This once-off award scheme will be carried out between September and December 2005. A formal award ceremony will take place in Áras an Uachtaráin with President McAleese in March, 2006.
The award scheme was launched as part of 2005 European Year of Citizenship through Education. The scheme is aimed at young people aged 12-25 who are involved in their local communities through active citizenship projects, such as environmental work, caring for people with special needs or affirming diversity. The Young Citizen Award is organised in conjunction with Citizenship2005.ie, the Department of Education & Science and Development Co-operation Ireland. It will be supported by County and City Development Boards who will oversee the local co-ordination and assessment of applications.
