Title: | 'Active citizenship and literacy' National Adult Literacy Awareness Week |
Description: | 26 - 30 September 2005. 'Active citizenship and literacy' is this year's theme for National Adult Literacy Awareness Week (NALAW). The awareness campaign will focus on organisations that facilitate active citizenship such as information givers, statutory organisations and community and voluntary groups . The intention is to assist them to deal more effectively and sensitively with the 500,000 adults (OECD 1997) who have literacy difficulties . This campaign will also examine how literacy can be a barrier to understanding and fully participating in all facets of society .
The Year in Ireland 'Citizenship2005.ie' supported the Awareness Week and also co-edited and co-funded a publication launched during this week entitled 'A Plain English Guide to Citizenship Terms'. It is planned to further develop this guide before the official end of the Year in Ireland in March 2006. |
